Service Description

A great way (and day) to see the foothills of the south Pennines. Leave your car at Wirksworth to be met with your bikes. Then travel with them by steam train (subject to availability) on the Ecclesbourne Valley Railway (Derbyshire’s longest heritage railway). Pass through the stations of Idridgehay and Shottle (which you will re pass by bike on your return journey) in historic style to reach the start of your bike adventure at Duffield. Duffield is a lovely market town and part of the Derwent Valley Mills World Heritage Area. Once you have finished exploring just take minor roads out of Duffield towards Kedleston Hall. Enter the Park grounds and cycle towards this English Heritage House and enjoy the wonderful views following Cutler Brook. Exit the Park to the north and take quiet minor roads to the village of Muggington. To the north of the village the wonderful Cock Inn is well worth a visit. Don’t be fooled by the sign it is named after the type of horse not a cockerel! Then travel down country lanes, farmers tracks and fields before reaching Windley chapel. You will again cross the railway line near Hazelwood and Shottlegate close to the Shottle Station. The Route then follows the railway line to Idridgehay Station and then turns east past the Black Swan and up into Kirk Ireton. You could stop for a coffee at the community shop in this pretty village or have a half at the Barley Mow where the landlord still visits the cellar to fill up your jug. You then enter shooting country back to Wirksworth passing game birds in the nearby fields. There are plenty of coffee stops in Wirksworth or have a chance to visit the railway museum to remind you of your Day. The tour is subject to the Steam train availability but the Ecclesbourne Railway usually runs Friday, Saturday and Sundays throughout the year.
