Tricycles are more stable than bikes but there is a knack to riding them
There is no doubt that riding an eTrike (eTricycle) is different to riding a normal bike or eBike. For some people it comes naturally but for others it takes a little while to master the skills which is why we offer taster sessions or come with you when you have not ridden a trike before
If you are used to riding a bike then you have to unlearn some habits but if you have never learnt to ride a bike it can often be easier to just get on a trike and ride
Most people do find it a little disconcerting at first but can normally get up and running after a short practise and training session
Detailed below are some useful tips and videos to help you
First try riding without power
Try on a flat area and start by riding slowly in big circles
Try not to put your feet down and use your brakes if you feel uncomfortable
Take the corners very slowly by turning the handlebars in the same way you would steer a car rather than leaning into them like you would on a bike
When you feel comrtable on the trike you can switch the power on and start to make the circles smaller but keep moving slowly
Next you need to learn to handle the trike on a camber (sloping surface) both on a straight road and round a corner - don't worry at a slow speed it is almost impossible to tip a trike over
Many roads & paths slope towards the gutter / side (camber) so this will make the trike move towards the side but although this is disconcerting it is easy to counter by turning your handlebars slightly uphill to keep going straight
On a corner or steeper camber you may need to either lean away from the camber (the opposite to the way you handle a corner on a bike) or just sit at an angle on the trike to avoid lifting one of the rear wheels in the air
Until you have mastered these basics just go slow and gently apply the brakes if you feel out of control or veering in the wrong direction
If you want to ride on rougher ground you will need to learn some additional skills and take into consideration your two rear wheels - this is a lot about route selection and being comfortable to lean a bit
Don't get too frustrated if it takes a while to learn (especially if you have ridden a bike for years) you will master it in the end and by going slow you will not tip the Trike over
The videos below provide a useful tutorials and we are very happy to run a full taster session with an instructor if you want to try an eTrike
The video opposite from the founder of Yorvik Tricycles is a very helpful guide to learning to ride a trike on cambers and well worth a watch
If you have not yet purchased a trike and want to try one out then our taster sessions, beginners tours and full tours are a great way to see what you think
