How Easy is it to Ride the White Peak Loop?

2 min read

We often get asked "how long does it take to cycle the White Peak Loop?"

So we thought we would explain a little bit more about this fantastic circular route that was launched in 2025 and has been developed by Derbyshire County Council

The official route is 42 miles long with just over 37 of them being off road. We have created our own slightly modified versions which are a little longer because

  1. We wanted to have a relaxed rural starting point

  2. We do not like the idea that you have to push uphill for some of the loop

  3. We wanted to try and cut out some of the busier roads

Please don't misunbderstand us we are big fans of the White Peak Loop as we believe it is a great showcase of what the Peak District has to offer cyclists. It also provides a bit more than just riding up and down one of the iconic trails. We are also supporters of the team that have developed the route and none of the points above are meant as criticism as we know they are working hard to continue to improve the route but we do think it is important to make everyone understands how to make the most of the loop as it exists today

How long it takes you to ride the full circuit will depend on

  1. Whether you are on a Standard Bike or eBike - there are some hills

  2. Cycling Experience & Fitness - only fitter people should consider doing in a day

  3. Number of stops & comfort breaks - the idea is that you enjoy the scenery

  4. Speed you ride at - this is not a race track and not designed to be ridden fast

There are also several important factors to consider before you set out on the loop which is why we have developer 2 different tours both with easy handlebar based navigation or a local guide

  1. eBike Battery Range - very few eBikes can manage the full route on a single battery charge which is why we send people out with battery extenders

  2. Start Point - do you want to start in a busy town or would you prefer free parking and a nice coffee at the start with some bonus scenery & villages

  3. Do you want to push - there is an uphill section over rough terrain where almost everyone needs to push - would you prefer to avoid this?

  4. Are you a good map reader - although the signposting is improving not all sections are easy to follow - which is why we have handlebar GPS

Our 2 tour options are

Two Day Bike Packing Adventure (29 & 25 Miles) - a more relaxed slightly longer but easier route that also helps you explore Bakewell & overnight in Ashford in the Water

One Day Full Circuit (51.7 Miles) - for the more adventutous with a rural starting point & avoids the sections where you have to push up hill

You can also bring your own bike or hire a bike only from one of several hire shops in the Peak District and use the simple map that is provided.
